Causes
Why Teeth Wear Down
Tooth wear is permanent. Enamel does not regenerate. Every year of untreated wear means more tooth structure lost and a more complex restoration required to fix it.
Bruxism (Grinding)
The most common cause. Most grinding happens at night, so patients are often unaware until a dentist shows them the flattened edges and worn facets. A custom night guard stops the damage; restorations rebuild what was lost.
Acid Erosion
Acidic foods and drinks (carbonated drinks, citrus, sports drinks), acid reflux, and frequent vomiting dissolve enamel chemically. The pattern is different from grinding wear and needs dietary counselling alongside restoration.
Abrasion
Hard-bristle brushing, abrasive whitening toothpastes, and nail-biting all remove enamel mechanically. Usually localised to specific teeth rather than the whole arch.
Combined Wear

What causes teeth to wear down?
The three main causes are bruxism (grinding, usually overnight), acid erosion (from acidic diet, reflux, or frequent vomiting), and abrasion (aggressive brushing, hard toothbrush, or abrasive toothpaste). Most patients have a combination. Identifying the cause is the first step because treatment that does not address the cause will wear again.
Can worn teeth be fixed without crowns?
Yes, for mild to moderate wear. Direct composite build-ups add material to the worn surfaces without removing enamel and complete in a single visit. Emax veneers or onlays cover the worn surface with ceramic for moderate wear. Full crowns are reserved for teeth that are severely worn or structurally compromised.
Will my teeth wear again after treatment?

How many visits does treatment take?
Composite build-ups complete in one visit. Emax veneer and crown cases require two visits: preparation and temporaries on day one, bonding after lab fabrication on day two (typically 5 to 7 working days). International patients can complete most worn teeth cases within a 7 to 10 day stay.
Do worn teeth hurt?
Often not at first. Sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet develops as enamel thins and dentine is exposed. By the time pain is consistent, significant enamel has already been lost. Early treatment preserves more tooth structure and avoids more invasive restorations later.
