What is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is a coordinated cosmetic dentistry plan that combines two or more treatments, whitening, porcelain veneers, gum contouring, Invisalign and crowns where needed, to redesign the appearance of your teeth as a single result. Unlike treating one tooth at a time, a makeover is planned end-to-end: shape, shade, length, gum line and bite are all decided before any tooth is touched, and the restorations are fabricated to match a digitally designed final smile.

Why Picasso for Smile Makeovers

Cosmetic Dentistry Specialist

Smile makeover cases at Picasso are led by Dr. Huong Nguyen (Dr. Rosie), our dedicated cosmetic dentist. Smile design is a different discipline from general restorative work. Your case is planned by someone who designs smiles every week.

You See It Three Times Before Bonding

Digital Smile Design rendering, physical lab wax-up, and a removable in-mouth composite mock-up. You approve every detail before any tooth is prepared.

Premium Porcelain Only

Emax Press, Emax Press Plus, Lisi and non-prep Emax. The same lithium disilicate and pressed-ceramic materials used by leading cosmetic clinics in Sydney and Paris. 7-year material warranty on every porcelain restoration.

iTero Digital Workflow

No putty trays. iTero scans capture your teeth at sub-30-micron accuracy, the lab fabricates restorations to digital tolerances, and shade-matching is calibrated digitally rather than by eye.

Honest Treatment Sequencing

If you really need Invisalign first, or whitening only, or a single crown, we will say so. Veneers placed on the wrong patient look beautiful for a year and fail expensively after. We are not interested in that outcome.

One-Trip Possible for Most Cases

A whitening-plus-veneers makeover finishes in two clinic visits over 2–3 weeks, which fits a single dental tourism trip. Cases that need Invisalign first are split into two phases, planned around your travel.

Building Blocks of a Smile Makeover

A smile makeover is rarely one treatment. It is a sequenced combination of these components, chosen to match the changes you actually want.

Professional Whitening

When: Teeth are healthy but discoloured.

What: In-clinic whitening session, often combined with take-home trays.

Best for: Setting the baseline shade before veneers are made.

Beyond, Pola Office or Zoom!

Porcelain Veneers (Emax)

When: You want to change shape, shade or minor positioning.

What: 0.3–0.5mm pressed lithium disilicate shells bonded to the front of each tooth.

Best for: The core of most smile makeovers, 6, 8 or 10 upper front teeth.

7-year material warranty

Lisi Premium Veneers

When: Showcase makeovers where translucency and surface texture matter most.

What: Top-tier pressed-ceramic veneer with refined optical properties.

Best for: Hollywood-style results, anterior aesthetic zone, high lip line.

Premium pressed ceramic

Gum Contouring

When: Gum line is uneven or you show too much gum when smiling.

What: Diode-laser gingivectomy reshapes the gum line. Heals in 1–2 weeks.

Best for: Short-looking front teeth, gummy smiles, asymmetric gum line.

Diode-laser gingivectomy

Invisalign Clear Aligners

When: Real misalignment, crowding or rotation.

What: Series of clear aligner trays, 6–18 months depending on severity.

Best for: Aligning first so fewer veneers are needed at the cosmetic finish.

Platinum Elite Provider

Porcelain Crowns

When: A tooth is structurally compromised (large filling, root canal, fracture).

What: Full-coverage Emax or Lisi crown, replacing the entire visible tooth.

Best for: Cases where a veneer would not provide enough strength.

5 to 10 year material warranty

Who Is, and Isn't, a Good Candidate?

A smile makeover is an aesthetic project layered onto healthy teeth and gums. It suits some patients beautifully and is the wrong starting point for others. Here is the honest version, decided after photographs, an iTero scan, a periodontal assessment and a bite check.

You're a Strong Candidate If

You want to change shape, shade, length or symmetry of your visible teeth, and you have realistic expectations.

Your gums are healthy, with no active periodontal disease.

Your teeth are structurally sound, intact enamel, no untreated decay or large failing fillings.

Your bite is stable, or correctable with Invisalign as a first phase.

You are willing to wear a nightguard if you grind, and to attend 6-month hygiene visits.

You can spend 2–3 weeks in Vietnam for the cosmetic phase, or split travel if Invisalign is needed first.

A Smile Makeover May Not Be Right If

You have active gum disease or untreated decay, both must be resolved first.

You grind or clench heavily without protection, porcelain can fracture.

You expect veneers to function permanently with no maintenance, all porcelain eventually needs replacement.

You have moderate or severe misalignment and refuse Invisalign, veneering severely crooked teeth produces a bulky, unnatural result.

You have significant enamel loss, there may not be enough surface for reliable bonding.

You want a result that is dramatically different from what your face supports, smile design is constrained by lip line, face shape and tooth position.

Risks & Honest Tradeoffs

Smile makeovers are well-documented cosmetic dentistry, but no procedure is risk-free. Here is what the literature reports, what can go wrong, and how Picasso minimises the avoidable risks.

Documented Longevity

Long-term clinical studies, including Layton & Walton (2012), report porcelain veneer survival of around 94% at 10 years and 67% at 20 years. Most veneers eventually need replacement; few last a lifetime untouched. Our 7-year material warranty reflects current clinical evidence.

What Can Go Wrong

Debonding (a veneer comes off, usually re-cementable). Fracture (porcelain chips or cracks). Marginal staining (colour pickup at the bond line over years). Sensitivity (typically transient in the weeks after preparation). Shade drift (natural neighbouring teeth darken over years while veneers do not).

How We Minimise Risk

Conservative 0.3–0.5mm preparation only. Three-stage preview (DSD, wax-up, mock-up) before any tooth is touched. iTero digital impressions for sub-30-micron fit. Bite assessment and nightguard recommendation for grinders. Premium pressed-ceramic materials with manufacturer documentation.

The Irreversibility Tradeoff

Conventional Emax Press veneers require a small amount of enamel removal, that enamel does not regrow. Once you commit, the prepared teeth will always need a veneer or crown. Non-prep Emax veneers preserve all enamel and are reversible in principle. We choose the most conservative option each tooth allows.

If a Restoration Fails Within Warranty

Within the 7-year warranty period and under normal use, porcelain replacement is covered. We retain your digital impression files so a duplicate can be fabricated quickly without re-scanning, useful for international patients.

What We Will Tell You No To

If your case really needs Invisalign first, periodontal treatment first, or a smaller intervention than you are asking for, we will say so. Veneers placed on the wrong foundation look beautiful for a year and fail expensively after. We are not interested in that outcome.

The International Patient Journey

Two paths for patients flying in from abroad. Choose the one that fits your case and your travel plans.

Trip A: Single Trip (2–3 Weeks)

Pre-trip: Photographs, video and dental records reviewed by video consultation. Digital Smile Design preview shared before you fly.

Week 1: Arrival, in-person consultation, iTero scan, wax-up approved, in-mouth mock-up, whitening completed.

Week 2: Preparation, temporaries, lab fabrication.

Week 3: Bonding, gum contouring (if planned), polish, photographs, case file.

Best for: Whitening + veneers makeovers without significant misalignment or implant needs.

Trip B: Split Trip (Invisalign + Veneers)

Trip 1 (5–7 days): Consultation, iTero scan, Invisalign treatment plan, first set of aligners shipped to you.

Wait at home: 6–18 months of Invisalign treatment with refinements shipped between visits. WhatsApp check-ins.

Trip 2 (2–3 weeks): Final alignment review, whitening, wax-up, mock-up, preparation, bonding.

Best for: Cases with real misalignment where veneering crooked teeth would produce a bulky, unnatural result.

Common Questions

How much does a smile makeover cost in Vietnam?

The fee depends on the configuration (Light, Standard, Premium, or Full Hollywood Smile), the materials chosen (composite, Emax Press, or Lisi), and any preparatory work (whitening, hygiene, Invisalign or gum contouring) needed. After your free consultation we provide a written, itemised quote. For published rates, see the cosmetic dentistry cost guide.

How long does a smile makeover take?

A pure veneer-and-whitening makeover typically completes in 2–3 weeks across two clinic visits. If your case needs Invisalign first, total time extends to 6–18 months depending on alignment severity, though the cosmetic finishing visits still only take 2–3 weeks at the end. We sequence as much digital planning as possible before you fly in, so on-site time is minimised.

Veneers, crowns, whitening or Invisalign, which do I actually need?

Whitening changes shade only. Veneers correct shape, shade and minor positioning, they are cosmetic and require enamel for bonding. Crowns are full-coverage and used when a tooth is structurally compromised. Invisalign moves the actual position of teeth and is the right tool for real misalignment. Most smile makeovers combine whitening plus 6, 8 or 10 veneers. Cases with significant misalignment align first with Invisalign, then refine with a smaller number of veneers.

Will I see my new smile before any tooth is touched?

Yes, three times. First as a Digital Smile Design rendering, second as a physical wax-up on a model of your teeth, and third as a removable composite mock-up worn in your mouth. We adjust shape, length, edge profile and gum line based on your feedback before any preparation begins.

How many veneers will I need?

Smile makeovers most commonly involve 6, 8 or 10 veneers across the upper front teeth so the result blends naturally with your lower teeth. A Hollywood Smile typically uses 16 to 20 veneers across both arches. The cosmetic dentist recommends a number after seeing your photographs, smile line and how many teeth show when you talk and laugh.

Will my smile makeover look natural or fake?

That is your choice, designed in the wax-up and mock-up phases. We can deliver bright, uniform Hollywood-style smiles or subtle, age-appropriate restorations that look like teeth you were born with. Material choice (Emax Press for natural translucency, Lisi for highest translucency, composite for affordability) and shade selection are decided after you see the mock-up in your own face, in normal light.

Do I need whitening before veneers?

Often yes. Veneer porcelain does not change colour, so the shade of your other teeth sets the limit on how bright your veneers can naturally blend. If only the front 6–10 teeth are veneered, we whiten the remaining natural teeth first so the final shade decision is made against a stable, brighter baseline.

What if my gums are uneven or my smile shows too much gum?

Gum contouring (gingivectomy with diode laser) reshapes the gum line so teeth appear in correct proportion. Most cases heal in 1–2 weeks. Gum contouring is included as a component in many of our smile makeover plans, particularly for patients with a high lip line or short-looking front teeth.

Can I get a smile makeover as an international patient?

Yes. A pure veneer-and-whitening makeover finishes in 2–3 weeks within a single trip. We plan the case digitally before you fly: photographs, video, dental records review and Digital Smile Design preview by video consultation, so the wax-up, mock-up, preparation and bonding can be sequenced into your stay. See our international patient guide for travel logistics, hotel partners and airport transfer.

What is your warranty on smile makeover restorations?

Emax Press, Emax Press Plus, Lisi and non-prep Emax veneers each carry a 7-year material warranty. Composite veneers carry a 6-month warranty. Whitening results are not warranted (lifestyle-dependent), but we provide top-up trays. We retain your digital records so duplicate restorations can be fabricated quickly without re-scanning.
