What Are Self-Ligating Braces?

Self-ligating braces are fixed orthodontic braces with brackets that have a built-in sliding clip to hold the archwire in place, replacing the elastic ties used in traditional braces. The clip allows the wire to slide as teeth move, reducing friction. The result is a slightly cleaner appearance, modestly faster treatment in some cases, longer intervals between adjustments, and easier hygiene. Available in metal and ceramic versions.

Why Choose Self-Ligating?

Fewer Adjustment Visits

10 weeks between visits vs 6 weeks for traditional braces. For patients with demanding schedules, frequent travel, or international orthodontic patients, this matters significantly.

Easier Hygiene

No elastic ties means fewer surfaces for plaque to accumulate. Brushing and flossing technique is more forgiving. Long-term gum health benefits accumulate over a 36 month treatment.

Cleaner Appearance

The bracket profile is sleeker without the bulky tie loops of traditional braces. Combined with ceramic, this is the closest fixed-brace approximation to clear aligner aesthetics.

Self-Ligating Pricing

Both metal and ceramic options across mild, moderate and severe case complexity. Per-tier pricing is published on our cost guide. All-inclusive of consultation, X-rays, treatment planning, all adjustment visits, debonding, and final retainers.

Self-ligating sits at a meaningful premium over equivalent traditional braces. The premium funds the bracket technology and the convenience benefits.

Self-ligating is worth the premium for patients prioritising fewer visits, easier hygiene and a cleaner appearance. Traditional braces remain excellent value for budget-conscious patients.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Self-ligating works for most cases. The decision is preference and budget, not eligibility.

Self-Ligating Suits You If

You travel frequently or have a demanding schedule (longer intervals between visits help).

You want easier daily hygiene with fewer surfaces to clean around.

You are an adult prioritising appearance during treatment.

You can absorb the modest cost premium over traditional braces.

You want a slightly cleaner-looking bracket profile.

You like the prospect of slightly faster treatment in some cases.

Traditional Braces May Suit You If

You are budget-conscious and the cost premium is meaningful.

You can attend visits every 6 weeks without inconvenience.

Your case has very specific bracket requirements where traditional may be slightly preferred (rare).

Your specialist orthodontist recommends traditional for case-specific reasons.

Visibility is not a concern, you don't need the cleaner bracket profile.

Daily Life with Self-Ligating Braces

Mostly the same as traditional braces. The differences are practical, not lifestyle-altering.

Hygiene

Brush after every meal. The absence of elastic ties means slightly less plaque trapping. Use interdental brushes around brackets and floss threaders for under-wire cleaning. A water flosser is optional but helpful.

Eating

Same restrictions as traditional braces: avoid hard, sticky, chewy and crunchy foods. The bracket profile is sleeker but still vulnerable to impact damage.

Discomfort

3 days of pressure after the initial bonding and after each adjustment. Some patients report slightly less soreness than with traditional braces, others notice no difference. Over-the-counter pain relief is enough.

Travel and Schedule

The 10 week interval between visits is the practical advantage. Easier to fit around work travel, family commitments, or international orthodontic patients combining visits with trips home.

Adjustments

Generally shorter visits than traditional braces, the orthodontist opens the clip, changes the wire, closes the clip. No tying or untying of elastic ties at every bracket.

Sport & Activities

Same precautions as any fixed braces. Custom orthodontic mouthguard for contact sports. Avoid direct facial impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces are fixed orthodontic braces with brackets that have a built-in sliding clip to hold the archwire, instead of the elastic ties used in traditional braces. The clip lets the wire slide as teeth move, reducing friction and generally allowing slightly fewer adjustment visits with easier hygiene.

How much do self-ligating braces cost in Vietnam?

Self-ligating metal and self-ligating ceramic braces are tiered by case complexity (mild, moderate, severe). Per-tier pricing is published on our cost guide. Pricing covers the full course including all adjustments and final retainers.

Are self-ligating braces faster than traditional?

In some cases, slightly. The reduced friction can speed certain tooth movements. However, the difference is modest and dependent on the individual case. Marketing claims of dramatically faster treatment are typically overstated. Treatment time is similar to traditional braces for most cases.

What is Damon System?

Damon System is a well-known brand of self-ligating brackets that pioneered the modern self-ligating philosophy. Picasso Dental uses Damon-style self-ligating brackets and equivalent quality systems from established orthodontic manufacturers.

Are self-ligating braces better than traditional?

"Better" is the wrong frame. Both produce excellent outcomes when planned by a specialist. Self-ligating offers fewer adjustment visits, easier hygiene, and a slightly cleaner appearance. Traditional braces are less expensive and equally effective. The choice is preference and budget, not clinical superiority.

How often do I need adjustments with self-ligating?

Typically every 10 weeks, vs every 6 weeks for traditional braces. The reduced visit frequency is one of the practical advantages of self-ligating, useful for patients with demanding schedules or those travelling regularly.

Can I have self-ligating ceramic instead of metal?

Yes. Self-ligating ceramic combines the convenience of self-ligating with the discreet appearance of ceramic, the premium fixed-brace option for adults. Per-tier pricing is on our cost guide.

Are self-ligating braces less painful?

Some patients report slightly less discomfort because the sliding wire produces lower friction forces. Others notice no difference. The post-bonding adaptation period and post-adjustment soreness are essentially the same as traditional braces.

How long does self-ligating treatment take?

Mild cases typically take 18 months. Moderate cases 24 months. Severe and complex cases 36 months. Slight reductions in some cases ( 3 months) are possible vs traditional braces.

Is hygiene easier with self-ligating?

Yes, modestly. The absence of elastic ties means fewer surfaces for plaque to accumulate. Brushing and flossing techniques are simpler. The total time spent on oral hygiene is similar, but the technique is more forgiving.

Are self-ligating braces good for adults?

Yes, often the preferred choice for adults. Fewer visits suits busy schedules, easier hygiene helps long-term gum health, and the cleaner appearance (especially in ceramic) is more compatible with professional life.

Will I need retainers after self-ligating braces?

Yes, long-term. Teeth naturally drift, especially in the first year after braces are removed. Retainer options include clear (Essix), Hawley, fixed (bonded) and Vivera. Per-jaw and both-jaws pricing is on our cost guide.
