Brand Deep-Dive: Straumann
The world's largest dental implant manufacturer by volume. Swiss-engineered, with the most extensive global clinical database.
Origin & Heritage
Founded 1954 in Basel, Switzerland. Dental implants since the 1980s. Listed on the Swiss stock exchange. Headquartered in Basel; manufacturing in Switzerland, Germany and the USA.
Material: Roxolid
Proprietary titanium-zirconium alloy. Stronger than commercially pure titanium, allowing smaller-diameter implants without compromising load-bearing capacity. Particularly useful in narrow ridges.
Surface: SLActive
Hydrophilic surface treatment that accelerates osseointegration. Documented integration time as short as 3 to 4 weeks under ideal conditions, vs 8 to 12 weeks for conventional surfaces. The most clinically documented surface in dentistry.
Clinical Documentation
Tens of thousands of peer-reviewed studies, the most comprehensive long-term clinical database in the dental implant industry. 10-year survival consistently above 97 percent across multiple study cohorts.
Best For
Any case where the surgeon and patient want maximum documented evidence and surface performance. Particularly valued in narrow ridges (Roxolid), aesthetic-zone front teeth, and academic settings.
Warranty
Lifetime warranty on the implant fixture against material and manufacturing defects. Component warranties typically 5 to 10 years depending on the prosthetic component.
Brand Deep-Dive: Nobel Biocare
The pioneer of modern dental implants. Founded by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who discovered osseointegration in 1952.
Origin & Heritage
The original modern dental implant. Brånemark placed the first titanium implant in a human in 1965; Nobel Biocare commercialised the technology. Now part of Envista (Danaher spin-off). Headquartered in Switzerland.
Material: Commercially Pure Titanium (Grade 4)
Standard-grade implant titanium with proven decades of clinical use. The Active line uses Ti-6Al-4V alloy for higher strength.
Surface: TiUnite
Anodic-oxidation surface treatment producing a porous titanium oxide layer. The most documented surface in implant history (originated 2000), with 20+ years of long-term outcome data. Excellent osseointegration in poor-quality bone.
Clinical Documentation
The original Brånemark protocol. Decades of peer-reviewed clinical studies. The All-on-4 protocol was developed and originally documented using Nobel Biocare implants by Dr. Paulo Maló in the 1990s.
Best For
All-on-4 full-arch cases (the original protocol). Aesthetic-zone implants. Cases with compromised bone quality. Patients who want the brand with the longest pedigree.
Warranty
Lifetime warranty on the implant fixture. Component warranties typically 5 to 10 years.
Brand Deep-Dive: Osstem
The market leader in Asia. South Korea-based, the largest implant manufacturer in the region.
Origin & Heritage
Founded 1997 in Seoul, South Korea. Now the largest implant manufacturer in Asia and one of the top 5 globally by volume. Publicly listed on the Korean stock exchange.
Material: Commercially Pure Titanium (Grade 4)
Standard-grade implant titanium. Same base material as Nobel Biocare's standard line.
Surface: SA (Sandblasted & Acid-etched)
Roughened titanium surface treatment, broadly equivalent to the SLA surface used by Straumann's older line. Standard rough surface with documented osseointegration performance.
Clinical Documentation
Substantial published evidence, primarily from Korean and Asian clinical centres. 10-year survival rates consistently in the 95 to 98 percent range, comparable to premium brands. Less Western academic literature than Straumann or Nobel.
Best For
Standard cases (most patients): single tooth replacement in normal bone, multiple tooth bridges, All-on-4 in cost-conscious cases. We use Osstem extensively because it works, at a price patients can afford.
Warranty
Manufacturer warranty on the fixture (10+ years against material and manufacturing defects). Component warranties typically 5 years.
Brand Deep-Dive: Neodent
Brazilian manufacturer, part of the Straumann Group since 2008. Straumann technology at a more accessible price point.
Origin & Heritage
Founded 1993 in Curitiba, Brazil. Acquired by the Straumann Group in 2008. Continues to operate as a separate brand within the Straumann portfolio. The largest implant manufacturer in Latin America.
Material: Commercially Pure Titanium (Grade 4)
Same base material as Nobel Biocare's standard line and Osstem. The Helix line uses Ti-6Al-4V alloy for stronger fixture options.
Surface: Acqua / NeoPoros
Hydrophilic surface treatments comparable in design intent to Straumann's SLActive. NeoPoros is the standard rough surface; Acqua adds hydrophilic activation for accelerated integration.
Clinical Documentation
Substantial Brazilian and Latin American clinical evidence; growing Western literature since the Straumann acquisition. Survival rates comparable to premium brands. Helix Grand Morse is a popular international product.
Best For
Patients who want Straumann-affiliated quality at a more accessible price point. Standard cases, single-tooth and multiple-tooth bridges, All-on-4 cases. The middle ground between Osstem and Straumann.
Warranty
Lifetime warranty on the implant fixture (terms equivalent to Straumann). Component warranties typically 5 to 10 years.
Brand Deep-Dive: Straumann BLX
Straumann's purpose-built immediate-load implant system. The standard for same-day teeth in single-tooth cases.
What Makes BLX Different
Aggressive tapered apical design, deep self-cutting threads, and Roxolid alloy material. The combination produces high primary stability at insertion, the prerequisite for safely loading the implant on the day of placement.
Material: Roxolid
Same Roxolid titanium-zirconium alloy used across the Straumann premium line. Stronger than pure titanium, supporting the BLX design.
Surface: SLActive
Same SLActive hydrophilic surface used across the Straumann premium line. Accelerates osseointegration to as little as 3 to 4 weeks under ideal conditions.
When BLX Excels
Immediate-load anterior teeth (front of the mouth, light bite forces). Fresh extraction sockets. Soft-bone upper jaw cases where extra stability matters. Any case where same-day fixed teeth are the priority.
When We Don't Use BLX
Standard delayed-load posterior cases where Osstem or Neodent perform identically at lower cost. We do not prescribe premium hardware where it does not add clinical value.
Warranty
Same Straumann lifetime warranty as the SLActive line. Component warranties typically 5 to 10 years.

How to Choose: Decision Framework
Use this framework to guide your conversation with our implant team. Final recommendation always depends on your specific CBCT and case.
Choose Osstem If
You have a standard case (single tooth in good bone, multiple tooth bridge in normal bone). You are budget-conscious without compromising on a genuine, certified, warrantied fixture. You want excellent value.
Choose Neodent If
You want Straumann-group technology at a more accessible price point. Standard or moderately complex cases. You want a hydrophilic surface (Acqua) without paying full Straumann pricing.
Choose Nobel Biocare If
You are having an All-on-4 (the original protocol). You want the brand with the longest pedigree. Aesthetic-zone front teeth where prosthetic component variety matters. Complex cases.
Choose Straumann (SLActive) If
You want the brand with the most documented clinical evidence globally. Narrow ridge cases (Roxolid material). You want the fastest-integrating surface for accelerated treatment.
Choose Straumann BLX If
You want immediate-load (same-day) teeth. Fresh extraction sockets where high primary stability is needed. Front-tooth single implants where you want to leave with a fixed temporary on day one.
The Honest Default
For 70 percent of patients, Osstem produces an excellent, cost-effective result. For 20 percent, Neodent fits the case slightly better. For 10 percent (aesthetic zones, complex cases, All-on-4), Nobel Biocare or Straumann are worth the premium. We tell you honestly what fits your case.
How to Verify Your Implant is Genuine
Three checks to confirm the implant placed in your mouth is the brand you paid for. Picasso Dental supports all three by default.
Serial Number Documentation
Every genuine implant has a unique serial number (or batch number) recorded by the manufacturer. We provide this in writing as part of your case file. You can verify it directly with the manufacturer if you wish.
Surgical Sticker
Every implant ships with a sterile sticker identifying the brand, length, diameter and lot number. We affix this sticker to your patient record at surgery, ask to see it.
Manufacturer Warranty Certificate
Genuine fixtures come with a warranty certificate that the clinic registers with the manufacturer post-surgery. We provide this. Counterfeit fixtures cannot generate valid warranty registrations.
Why This Matters
Counterfeit implants exist in some markets and may use lower-grade titanium, defective surface treatments, or imprecise dimensions. They place at substantially lower cost to the clinic. The safety implications can be severe; warranty is non-existent.
Picasso Dental's Commitment
We purchase implants only from authorised manufacturer distributors. We provide serial numbers, surgical stickers, and warranty certificates in every case file. If you ever have any doubt, contact the manufacturer directly with the serial number we provide.
The Easy Test
Ask any clinic, anywhere: "What is the serial number, and can I verify with the manufacturer?" If they decline or can't answer, the fixture may not be what they say. If they answer immediately, you are likely in good hands.
Brand Choice in Real Cases
How we have actually recommended brands in recent cases. Each shows how brand and case match up in practice.
Sarah, Sydney, single lower molar
Recommendation: Osstem TS III. Standard case, normal bone, posterior position with primarily mechanical demand. Saved her 5,000 AUD vs Sydney pricing without compromise.
David, London, upper central incisor
Recommendation: Straumann BLX with immediate load. Aesthetic priority (front tooth), fresh extraction socket, patient travelling and wanting same-day fixed temporary. The premium was justified by the indication.
James, Auckland, All-on-4 upper
Recommendation: Nobel Biocare All-on-4. The original protocol, full documentation, complex angled-implant placement. The premium pricing matched the complexity.
Emma, Hanoi, 3-unit posterior bridge
Recommendation: Neodent. Standard 3-unit case, slight bone augmentation needed, mid-tier budget. The Straumann-group technology gave reassurance at accessible cost.
Mark, Singapore, full mouth All-on-4
Recommendation: Nobel Biocare in upper, Osstem in lower. Upper jaw needed the proven premium All-on-4 brand; lower jaw had excellent bone, where Osstem performs identically at lower cost. Mixed configuration is the rational choice.
Linda, Da Nang, single front incisor (post-trauma)
Recommendation: Straumann SLActive. Aesthetic zone, thin gum biotype, soft tissue priority. The SLActive surface and prosthetic-component variety matched the case requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best dental implant brands?
The four most internationally documented dental implant brands are Straumann (Switzerland), Nobel Biocare (Switzerland, owned by Envista), Osstem (South Korea, market leader in Asia) and Neodent (Brazil, Straumann Group). Picasso Dental offers all four, plus Straumann BLX for immediate-load protocols, all genuine fixtures with manufacturer warranty.
Is Straumann or Nobel Biocare better?
Both are top-tier internationally and clinically equivalent for most cases. Straumann has the largest documented clinical database globally and Roxolid material technology. Nobel Biocare has the longest pedigree and TiUnite surface. The choice often comes down to specific case needs and the surgeon's familiarity with each system.
Is Osstem a good implant brand?
Yes. Osstem is the market leader in Asia and one of the largest dental implant manufacturers globally. The TS III system has extensive documented clinical use, manufacturer warranty, and is widely placed by reputable clinicians worldwide. It is well-suited to standard cases at a substantially lower cost than Swiss premium brands.
What's the difference between Neodent and Straumann?
Neodent is part of the Straumann Group (acquired in 2008) but operates as a separate brand at a more accessible price point. Neodent fixtures use Straumann technology and quality control, with surface treatment (Acqua/NeoPoros) and design (Helix Grand Morse) optimised for cost-effective high-volume production.
What's the difference between Straumann SLActive and Straumann BLX?
SLActive is Straumann's hydrophilic surface treatment that accelerates osseointegration; it appears on multiple Straumann implant lines including BLX. BLX is a specific implant design featuring an aggressive tapered shape, deep self-cutting threads and Roxolid alloy, optimised for high primary stability and immediate-load protocols.
How long do dental implants last by brand?
All major brands report 10-year survival rates in the 95 to 98 percent range when properly placed and maintained. There is no clinically meaningful difference in long-term survival between Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem and Neodent. The biggest determinants of longevity are surgical placement, patient health, and ongoing maintenance, not brand.
Are cheaper implant brands lower quality?
Not necessarily. Brands like Osstem and Neodent are substantially cheaper than Straumann and Nobel Biocare due to scale, regional production and different R&D investment levels, not because the fixtures are lower quality. Both have full international certification (FDA, CE, ISO) and full manufacturer warranties.
Which implant brand is best for the front teeth?
For aesthetic-zone (front) implants, Nobel Biocare and Straumann are most often recommended because the abutment and prosthetic component options give the most flexibility for matching gum architecture and crown emergence. The fixture choice matters less than the careful soft-tissue and crown work.
Which implant brand is best for full-arch (All-on-4) cases?
All four brands work well. Nobel Biocare originated the All-on-4 protocol and has the most extensive documentation specifically for that procedure. Straumann is widely used. Osstem and Neodent are excellent value options for cost-conscious patients seeking the same fixed-bridge result.
Are all your implants genuine?
Yes. Picasso Dental purchases all implant fixtures directly from the manufacturer or authorised distributor. Every implant comes with a verifiable serial number, manufacturer warranty, and factory packaging. We provide your implant serial numbers in writing as part of the case file. We do not place grey-market or counterfeit fixtures.
What warranty comes with each brand?
Every brand we offer issues a full international manufacturer warranty (typically 10+ years for the fixture, with some brands offering lifetime fixture coverage subject to terms). We provide written warranty documentation with every case file.
Should I choose by brand or by surgeon?
By surgeon, then by brand. A skilled surgeon placing an Osstem implant will outperform a less experienced surgeon placing a Nobel Biocare. Brand matters, but surgical skill, CBCT planning and aftercare matter more for long-term outcomes. Pick a clinician you trust, then have an honest conversation about which brand fits your case.
