Crooked Teeth, Many Ways to Fix.

Crooked teeth come in many forms: mild crowding, severe rotations, gaps, overlapping, lifted teeth. The right treatment depends on what's wrong, how severe it is, your timeline and your priorities. Traditional braces, Invisalign, or cosmetic veneers (when alignment is mild and you want a fast aesthetic fix), here's the full decision framework.

What "Crooked Teeth" Actually Means

"Crooked" covers many distinct issues. Diagnosing what is actually wrong is the first step toward the right treatment.

Crowding

Too many teeth for the available space. Teeth overlap, twist or push forward. Mild: 2 mm of overlap. Moderate: 5 mm. Severe: 6+ mm or major rotations.

Spacing (Gaps)

Too much space relative to tooth size. Visible gaps between teeth, especially front teeth. Common in patients with smaller-than-average teeth or wider arches.

Rotations

Individual teeth rotated out of alignment. Most commonly affects upper lateral incisors and canines. Can be mild (under 15 degrees) or severe (30+ degrees).

Tipping

Teeth tilted forward or backward without rotation. Often follows long-term tooth loss in adjacent positions, neighbouring teeth tip into the gap.

Lifted (Extruded) or Sunken (Intruded)

Teeth out of their proper vertical position. Lifted teeth often follow loss of opposing teeth (the tooth has nothing biting against it and erupts further). Sunken teeth are less common but follow heavy bite forces.

Bite Issues (Often Combined)

Crooked teeth often come with bite problems, overbite, underbite, crossbite, deep bite, open bite. We always assess the bite alongside alignment.

The Treatment Options

Three broad approaches. The right one depends on what's wrong and what you want.

Move the Teeth (Orthodontics)

How: Braces or Invisalign physically reposition teeth into proper alignment. The natural teeth are preserved.

Best for: Most cases, especially mild to severe crowding, rotations, gaps and bite issues. The right answer when long-term function and tooth preservation matter.

Time: 6 to 36 months.

Reshape the Tooth Surface (Cosmetic)

How: Porcelain veneers cover the front surface of teeth, creating a straight appearance without moving them. Composite bonding can do similar at lower cost for limited cases.

Best for: Very mild aesthetic concerns where time is short and orthodontics is not preferred. Gap closures (diastema). Patients wanting a fast aesthetic fix.

Time: 2 to 3 weeks (porcelain veneers).

Combination (Ortho + Cosmetic)

How: Short orthodontic course (Invisalign Lite, 6 to 12 months) to align mild rotations, then minimal veneers or composite to perfect the result.

Best for: Patients with moderate crowding plus aesthetic priorities. Often delivers better outcomes than either alone, at lower total time than comprehensive ortho or comprehensive veneers.

Time: 9 to 14 months.

By Severity: What Fits Your Case

The right treatment depends on what is actually wrong. Here is the rough mapping.

ConcernRecommended ApproachTimeline
Mild front-tooth crowding (1 to 2 mm)Invisalign Lite or short braces6 to 9 months
Moderate crowding (3 to 5 mm)Invisalign Moderate or ceramic braces12 to 18 months
Severe crowding (6+ mm)Invisalign Comprehensive or comprehensive braces (often with extractions)24 to 36 months

These are typical pathways. Your specific case may differ, the specialist orthodontist gives an honest recommendation after exam, photos and iTero scan.

The Orthodontic vs Cosmetic Decision

The most-asked question from adult patients with crooked teeth. The honest comparison.

Common Scenarios & Real Recommendations

How specific situations are typically handled.

"My Lower Front Teeth Are Crowded"

Most common adult concern. Lower incisor crowding is typical post-relapse. Invisalign Lite (6 to 12 months) is usually the answer. Combined with a fixed retainer behind the lower front teeth to prevent re-relapse.

"I Have a Gap Between My Front Teeth"

Three options. Composite bonding (1 visit, 5 to 7 year lifespan). 2 veneers (2 weeks, 10 to 15 year lifespan). Invisalign Lite (6 to 9 months, permanent if retained). The right answer depends on gap size and your priorities.

"My Adult Teeth Are More Crooked Than They Were"

Late-life crowding is common in 30s to 50s. Lower incisors usually first. Treatment depends on severity, mild cases with Invisalign Lite, moderate cases with comprehensive Invisalign or ceramic braces. Always combined with retention.

"I Had Braces As a Teen and Now They've Drifted"

Post-orthodontic relapse. Common when retainers were not worn long-term. Mild relapse: 6 to 12 months of Invisalign Lite. Moderate relapse: comprehensive retreatment. Always paired with a fixed retainer this time.

"I Want a Fast Cosmetic Fix Before My Wedding"

Honest answer: 8 to 10 porcelain veneers in 2 to 3 weeks. This works for mild crowding and minor rotations. For severe crowding, no fast cosmetic fix exists, you genuinely need 9 to 12 months of orthodontics.

"My Dentist Recommended Veneers But I'm Hesitant"

Get a specialist orthodontic opinion. Many cases that general dentists recommend veneers for can be treated with 12 months of Invisalign Lite at lower cost and without enamel removal. Both approaches valid, but you deserve to compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I fix crooked teeth without braces?

Three alternatives to traditional braces. Invisalign clear aligners (removable, near-invisible). Porcelain veneers (cosmetic surface treatment, 3 weeks). Composite bonding (limited cases, 1 visit). The right alternative depends on the severity and what you want to achieve.

Are veneers as good as braces for crooked teeth?

For very mild aesthetic concerns, sometimes. Veneers can give the appearance of straight teeth in 3 weeks but they do not move the underlying teeth or correct bite issues. For moderate or severe crowding, or anything involving the bite, orthodontics gives a more durable, more functional outcome.

How much does it cost to fix crooked teeth in Vietnam?

Pricing depends on the approach: composite bonding for minor concerns, porcelain veneers, Invisalign clear aligners, traditional metal braces, or comprehensive ceramic braces. After your free consultation we provide a written, itemised quote. See our Invisalign cost guide or cosmetic pricing for current ranges.

Can I just get veneers if my teeth are slightly crooked?

Possibly, but get a specialist orthodontic opinion first. Many cases that general dentists recommend veneers for can be treated with 12 months of Invisalign Lite at lower cost without removing enamel. Both approaches are valid, but you deserve to compare them.

How long does it take to fix crooked teeth?

Composite bonding: 1 visit. Porcelain veneers: 3 weeks. Invisalign Lite (mild): 9 months. Invisalign Comprehensive: 30 months. Comprehensive braces: 36 months. The right pace depends on the severity.

Do I need to fix my bite as well as my crooked teeth?

Often yes. Crooked teeth and bite issues frequently coexist. Orthodontics can address both at once; veneers only address the visible surface. If you have both, orthodontics is usually the right answer.

Can I have my crooked teeth fixed without anyone noticing?

Yes. Invisalign aligners are near-invisible at conversational distance. Lingual braces are completely invisible from the front. Ceramic braces are unobtrusive. Several discreet options exist.

What if I have crooked teeth and missing teeth?

Both can be addressed in coordinated treatment. Often orthodontics is done first to position remaining teeth correctly, then implants or bridges replace missing teeth. Specialist coordination between orthodontics and implant dentistry is part of our practice.

Is it too late to fix crooked teeth as an adult?

No. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adult orthodontics is a major part of our practice. Treatment may take slightly longer than in teens but outcomes are equally predictable.

Will my teeth get crooked again after treatment?

Without retainers, yes, gradual relapse over 10 years is common. With nightly retainer wear, your alignment is preserved long-term. Lifelong nightly retention is essential. We supply all retainer types and many adult patients choose a fixed retainer for the most reliable result.

Should I see a general dentist or a specialist orthodontist?

For orthodontic concerns specifically, see a specialist orthodontist. They have 3 additional years of training focused on tooth movement and bite correction. General dentists who offer orthodontics do not have this depth. All Picasso orthodontic cases are handled by specialists.

Will I need extractions to fix crooked teeth?

Sometimes. Severe crowding cases may need extractions to create alignment space. Modern techniques (IPR, palatal expansion, more efficient bracket systems) can sometimes avoid extractions. We tell you honestly at consultation.
