Dental Implants Guide

Dental Implants in Vietnam:
The Complete 2026 Guide

Missing teeth change more than your smile. This guide covers everything international patients need to know: real costs, the full two-trip process, how to choose a quality clinic, and whether Vietnam is right for your situation.

The short version

  1. Two trips, three to six months apart. Surgery on the first visit, crown placement on the second after osseointegration.
  2. Cost is 70 to 80 percent less than the US or Australia using the same tier-one implant brands.
  3. Brand matters more than price. Ask for Straumann, Nobel Biocare, or Osstem by name. "High quality imported" is not an answer.
  4. Success rate is 95 to 98 percent at reputable clinics. The risk is choosing the wrong clinic, not going to Vietnam.
  5. Get a written quote before you fly. Send your X-rays; a licensed dentist replies within 24 hours with an itemised estimate.
  6. No upper age limit. Candidacy is determined by bone density and general health, not age.

What a dental implant actually is

A dental implant is a complete tooth replacement system designed to function like natural teeth. It has three components.

The implant post is a small titanium screw placed surgically into the jawbone where the original tooth root was. Over several months, your bone grows around and fuses with this post through a process called osseointegration. The abutment is a connector piece attached to the post once healing is confirmed. The crown is the visible tooth, custom-made to match your natural teeth in colour, shape, and size.

Unlike dentures that sit on gums or bridges that depend on neighbouring teeth, implants replace the entire tooth structure from root to crown. This is why they feel, function, and last like natural teeth. With proper care, a well-placed implant from a tier-one brand should last 20 to 30 years or more.

Why patients choose Vietnam for implants

Vietnam has become a destination for dental implant treatment for several reasons beyond cost. Many Vietnamese implant specialists trained at universities in the US, Australia, Germany, and elsewhere. Top clinics in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City use the same advanced equipment found in Sydney or Los Angeles: 3D CBCT scanners, computer-guided surgery systems, and CAD/CAM fabrication. Reputable clinics use internationally recognised brands including Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Osstem, and Neodent.

Vietnam's lower cost of living means clinics can offer world-class care without the overhead that drives up prices in Western countries. The saving is on operating cost. It is not on implant brands, ceramic grades, or clinical standards.

The complete process: two trips

Getting dental implants in Vietnam is typically a three to six month process requiring two separate trips. Here is what each stage involves.

First trip: implant placement (5 to 7 days)

Your first visit begins with a thorough in-person examination and a 3D CBCT scan that shows jawbone structure, density, and nerve locations. You and your surgeon will discuss exact implant placement, whether bone grafting is needed, implant brand selection, and the expected timeline. The surgical placement itself takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes per implant under local anaesthesia. Most patients manage post-operative discomfort with over-the-counter medication. You leave with detailed aftercare instructions, a temporary restoration, and antibiotics if required.

The healing period: 3 to 6 months at home

Osseointegration cannot be rushed. During these months your bone is growing around and fusing with the implant post. Avoid smoking, maintain good oral hygiene, and follow all aftercare instructions exactly. Your surgeon may arrange virtual check-ins or work with your home dentist to monitor healing at intervals. Loading the implant with a permanent crown before osseointegration is complete significantly increases the risk of failure.

Second trip: crown placement (3 to 5 days)

Once osseointegration is confirmed via X-ray, you return for the final stage. Your surgeon attaches the abutment, takes digital impressions, and places your permanent custom crown. Clinics with in-house CAD/CAM labs typically fabricate crowns in one to three days. There is no surgical recovery on this trip. Most patients travel, eat normally, and leave with their permanent teeth.

Send your X-rays before you book flights. A licensed dentist reviews your records and replies within 24 hours with a written, itemised estimate. No deposit, no obligation.

Even after factoring in two return flights and accommodation, patients from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the US typically save tens of thousands of dollars on complex treatment. Single-implant patients often save enough on the procedure alone to cover both trips entirely.

Implant brands: why it matters which one goes in your jaw

The implant brand is the most important variable after surgeon skill, and the one most patients fail to ask about. Generic or tier-three implants carry a significantly higher failure rate at the five and ten-year marks compared to established international brands. Once an implant fails and must be removed, the bone around it is compromised, making replacement harder and more expensive.

Three brands account for the majority of peer-reviewed implant research and have global distribution networks that allow any dentist worldwide to access your implant records:

  • Straumann (Switzerland) The most widely researched implant brand globally. Over 70 years of clinical data. SLActive surface treatment produces faster osseointegration than most competitors. Premium tier, used for demanding cases including low bone density and immediate loading.
  • Nobel Biocare (Sweden) Pioneer of the osseointegration concept. All-on-4 was developed by Nobel Biocare and remains their most widely placed full-arch system. Excellent crown-to-implant compatibility and a large global database of case records.
  • Osstem (South Korea) The most placed implant brand in Asia. Extensive peer-reviewed track record and strong distribution in Vietnam, meaning replacement components are reliably available for future restorations. A sound mid-tier choice for straightforward single-implant cases.

At Picasso Dental we use Straumann, Nobel Biocare, and Osstem across all six branches, with Neodent (owned by the Straumann Group) available as a mid-tier option. We specify the brand and model in your written estimate and provide a material specification record at discharge.

Who is a good candidate

You are likely a strong candidate if you are missing one or more teeth, have adequate jawbone density, have healthy gums without active periodontal disease, are in generally good health, do not smoke, and can commit to the two-trip timeline.

There is no upper age limit. Candidacy depends on bone density and general health, not years of age. We have successfully treated patients in their 70s and 80s. The lower age limit is typically 18 to 21, once jaw growth is complete.

Smokers can receive implants but face meaningfully higher failure rates at every stage. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes require stabilisation before surgery. Both conditions should be disclosed during the initial consultation, not discovered on the day.

What about bone loss? Patients who have been missing a tooth for several years often have some bone resorption at the site. Minor bone loss can often be addressed with a simultaneous graft. More significant loss requires a staged approach: graft first, allow four to six months of healing, then place the implant. Your CBCT scan determines which path applies. This adds to the overall timeline but does not preclude implants in most cases.

  • Price changes significantly once you are in the clinic
  • Surgeon credentials not published or deflected when asked
  • Reviews only on the clinic's own site, absent from Google

Frequently asked questions

How much do dental implants cost in Vietnam?

A single implant using a named tier-one brand (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, or Osstem) costs USD $1,200 to $1,800 at Picasso Dental, compared to AUD $5,000 to $6,500 in Australia or USD $4,000 to $6,000 in the US. All-on-4 full-arch restorations cost USD $6,000 to $10,000 per arch. Even after two return flights and accommodation, international patients typically save tens of thousands on complex treatment. See our dental implants page for current itemised pricing.

How many trips do I need for dental implants in Vietnam?

Most patients need two trips. The first is five to seven days for surgical implant placement. You then return home for three to six months of osseointegration. The second trip is three to five days for abutment fitting and permanent crown placement. Some straightforward single-implant cases with pre-surgery CBCT imaging sent in advance can be scheduled for a longer single trip, which your surgeon will advise after reviewing your records.

Is it safe to get dental implants in Vietnam?

At reputable clinics using named international brands, yes. The key variables are surgeon training and case volume, implant brand, and sterilisation protocols. Reputable clinics in Vietnam use the same Straumann, Nobel Biocare, and Osstem fixtures and the same 3D CBCT and guided surgery technology as clinics in Australia or the US. The risk is choosing the wrong clinic. Ask for surgeon credentials, the implant brand by name, and a written warranty before you commit.

What implant brands does Picasso Dental use?

We use Straumann (Switzerland), Nobel Biocare (Sweden), and Osstem (South Korea) depending on case requirements and patient preference, with Neodent (Straumann Group, Brazil) available as a mid-tier option. We specify brand and model in your written estimate before you book, and provide a material specification record at discharge including the batch number of what was placed.

What is osseointegration and why does it take so long?

Osseointegration is the biological process by which your jawbone grows around and fuses with the titanium implant post. The bone cells need three to six months to fully integrate with the fixture surface. This cannot safely be rushed. Loading the implant with a permanent crown before osseointegration is complete significantly increases the risk of implant failure. During the healing period you wear a temporary restoration and avoid hard chewing on the implant site.

Do I need a bone graft before getting an implant?

Whether you need a graft depends on bone volume and density at the implant site, assessed from your 3D CBCT scan. Patients who have been missing a tooth for several years often have some resorption. Minor grafting can be performed simultaneously with implant placement. More significant bone loss requires a staged approach, graft first then implant after four to six months of healing. Your surgeon determines this from the scan during the first consultation.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Good candidates are patients missing one or more teeth with adequate jawbone density, healthy gums, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions that impair healing. There is no upper age limit. The lower limit is typically 18 to 21, once jaw growth is complete. Smokers can receive implants but face higher failure rates at every stage. Patients with low bone density may require grafting, which adds time but does not preclude implants in most cases.

What is the difference between All-on-4 and single dental implants?

Single implants replace individual teeth, one fixture per missing tooth. All-on-4 is a full-arch technique for patients missing all or most teeth in one or both jaws. Four (or six) implants are placed at angles to support a fixed full-arch bridge, eliminating the need for individual implants per tooth. The bridge is fixed and not removable. All-on-4 is typically faster and lower cost than placing individual implants for each missing tooth in a full arch.

What documentation do I receive when I fly home after implant surgery?

At discharge you receive a written treatment summary, digital X-rays and CBCT scan files, the implant brand, model, and batch number, a prescription if antibiotics were provided, aftercare instructions in English, and direct contact details for the clinical team. This documentation allows any dentist worldwide to manage your healing and any follow-up care without starting from zero.

What happens if something goes wrong after I return home?

Picasso Dental provides a direct WhatsApp contact to the clinical team for remote patients with a 24-hour response commitment. We share complete records with your home dentist on request. Our warranty covers implant failure attributable to clinical error. Failure related to patient factors (smoking, undisclosed bone disease, trauma) is reviewed case by case. We coordinate with your home practitioner directly to manage any remedial treatment.
