They are the ones who opened five browser tabs, sorted by price, and chose the lowest number. They did not ask the questions that actually predict whether a clinic is any good.

Vietnam has hundreds of dental clinics competing for international patients. Every one of them has a professional website, a list of services, and patient testimonials somewhere on their homepage. None of that tells you whether the dentist treating you trained at a credible institution, whether the implant they are placing is a recognised brand or a generic import, or whether anyone will answer a question at midnight six weeks later when something feels off.

The savings are real. A dental implant that costs AUD $5,500 in Sydney can cost USD $1,400 in Hanoi with the same Straumann or Nobel Biocare fixture inside it. That gap exists because rent, salaries, and utilities in Vietnam are a fraction of what an equivalent practice pays in Australia. The saving is on operating cost, not on clinical standards, and it should not be on materials.

But only at the right clinic. And finding the right clinic requires asking the right questions.

The seven criteria that actually predict whether a clinic is trustworthy

These are the questions experienced dental tourists use to screen clinics. A trustworthy clinic answers every single one without hesitation or deflection. Evasiveness on any of them is meaningful signal.

• A verifiable track record with international patients specifically Serving Australian, New Zealand, British, and American patients requires clear English communication, familiarity with Western treatment standards, and post-treatment support for someone flying home. Ask directly: how many international patients have you treated, from which countries, and for how long? A clinic with a genuine track record answers immediately with specifics.
• Independent reviews on platforms you control Reviews on a clinic's own website are curated and tell you nothing. Google Maps shows the unfiltered record. Look at volume (hundreds matters more than dozens), recency (recent reviews reflect today's team), and specificity (detailed reviews that name the dentist and describe the outcome months later are worth ten vague five-stars).
• Named, verifiable credentials for the individual dentist treating you Clinic branding can be impressive while the dentists behind it vary wildly. Ask for the profile of the specific dentist who will treat you: training institution, graduation year, post-graduate qualifications. Vietnam dental training is five to six years at an accredited medical university. International fellowship or specialist credentials are a meaningful signal above that baseline.
• Named implant and material brands, without prompting This is where corners get cut most silently. "High quality implants" and "premium ceramic" mean nothing. Ask for the brand name and country of manufacture. Internationally recognised implant brands: Straumann (Switzerland), Nobel Biocare (Sweden), Osstem (South Korea). For ceramics: Ivoclar Vivadent, 3M. If the answer is "imported" without a manufacturer name, that is your answer about what they are using.
• A written, itemised quote before you book flights Not a range. Not "depends on assessment." A real estimate based on your X-rays and photos, specifying each procedure, the material being placed, and the total cost. Pricing that shifts significantly once you are in the chair is a red flag. A trustworthy clinic sends this within 48 hours of receiving your records.
• A written warranty policy with a defined remote support process Ask: what is covered, for how long, and what happens if something goes wrong after I fly home? Minimum expectation: one year on crowns, three to five years on implants. More important than the period is the mechanism: direct access to a clinical contact, defined response time, willingness to share complete records with your home dentist.
• Consistent pricing with no dual rate for foreigners A trustworthy clinic charges the same price regardless of nationality. Dual pricing is a sign of operational culture that creates other problems. Confirm the pre-trip estimate matches what you are charged on the day. Clinically justified adjustments should be explained before treatment begins, not presented after.

What legitimate savings actually look like

The rule of thumb for quality dental tourism in Vietnam is 60 to 75 percent off equivalent home-country pricing. That range reflects genuine economic geography: lower rent, lower salaries, lower utilities. It does not reflect lower implant brands, lower ceramic grades, or lower clinical training.

If a clinic is quoting you 85 to 90 percent off Australian or UK pricing, ask what implant brand and grade they are using and verify the answer. At that discount level, something is almost always being substituted. The most common substitution is the implant fixture itself: generic or tier-three imports from unverified manufacturers carry a significantly higher failure rate at the five-year mark.

The question most patients forget to ask: what happens after you fly home?

Most post-treatment complications appear after the patient has returned home. Soreness that should have resolved. A crown that feels high when biting. An implant site still swollen after two weeks. In any of these scenarios, your first question is: can I reach anyone?

This is where the gap between trustworthy and unreliable clinics becomes most visible. "Email us" with no specific contact and no stated response time is not a support process. A direct line to a named clinical contact, with a documented response time of 24 hours or less, is.

A trustworthy clinic also provides your home dentist with what they need if follow-up care is required: records in a standard format, material specifications that a different dentist can act on, and a clinical summary that does not leave your home practitioner working blind.
