Why Adults Choose Orthodontic Treatment

The reasons differ from teens. Most adult patients have specific aesthetic, functional or health goals.

Aesthetic Concerns

Crowding worsens with age. Spacing develops. Old restorations become more visible against drifted teeth. Many adults seek treatment in their 30s, 40s and 50s for aesthetic reasons that finally outweigh other priorities.

Bite Issues Causing Wear

Untreated bite problems gradually wear teeth, crack restorations, and stress jaw joints. Treatment as an adult prevents further damage and can extend the life of natural teeth significantly.

Hygiene and Gum Health

Crowded teeth are harder to clean. Periodontists routinely refer adult patients for orthodontics to make hygiene maintainable, reducing long-term gum disease risk.

Pre-Restorative Alignment

Before veneers, crowns or implants, alignment matters. Many cosmetic and restorative cases start with 12 months of orthodontics to put teeth in the right position before final restorations.

Treatment Did Not Last

Patients who had braces or aligners as teens but did not wear retainers reliably often need 18 months of retreatment as adults. Picasso treats many post-relapse cases.

Functional Issues

Difficulty chewing, speech impacts, jaw pain. Functional concerns drive many adult orthodontic decisions, not just aesthetics.

Adult-Friendly Treatment Options

Most adults prioritise discreet, professional-life-compatible options. Here are the main choices.

Invisalign

Why adults choose it: Near-invisible, removable for important occasions, no eating restrictions.

Trade-off: Requires 22 hour daily wear discipline. Higher cost than ceramic braces.

Ceramic Braces

Why adults choose it: Tooth-coloured brackets, far less visible than metal, no compliance pressure.

Trade-off: Still visible up close. Eating restrictions apply.

Self-Ligating Ceramic

Why adults choose it: Cleanest fixed-brace appearance, fewer visits (every 10 weeks), no elastic ties.

Trade-off: Most expensive ceramic option. Eating restrictions apply.

Self-ligating →

Lingual Braces

Why adults choose it: Completely invisible from the front. Best for public-facing professionals.

Trade-off: Most expensive. Speech adaptation period of 4 weeks. Demanding hygiene.

Lingual braces →

Traditional Metal Braces

Why adults choose it: Lowest cost. Most durable. Effective for any case complexity.

Trade-off: Most visible. Many adults choose this when budget is the priority.

Metal braces →

Non-Invisalign Clear Aligners

Why adults choose it: Lower cost than Invisalign, removable, discreet.

Trade-off: Better suited to mild to moderate cases. Less international portability.

How Adult Treatment Differs from Teens

The clinical and practical differences. Most are minor, but worth understanding.

Slower Bone Remodelling

Adult bone is denser and remodels more slowly than teen bone. Treatment typically takes 30 percent longer for the same case complexity. Mild cases that take 12 months in teens may take 18 months in adults.

Periodontal Considerations

Adults more commonly have gum recession or bone loss. We perform a periodontal assessment before starting and address any active disease first. Some cases require coordination with a periodontist.

Existing Restorations

Crowns, veneers, implants and large fillings affect bracket bonding and tooth-movement planning. Specialist orthodontists adjust the plan to work around them.

Retention Is More Critical

Adult teeth have a stronger tendency to drift after treatment. Long-term retainer wear (often combined with a fixed retainer) is essential. Without it, relapse over 10 years is common.

Bite Adaptation

Adults have established jaw musculature and bite patterns. Bite changes can require longer adaptation. Some cases benefit from a brief night guard during the adaptation phase.

Realistic Aesthetics

Some adult cases have soft-tissue limitations (gum height, lip support) that mean we cannot reproduce a teenage smile. We discuss realistic expected outcomes at planning, not after treatment.

Working Adults: Treatment Around Professional Life

Practical adjustments for adults balancing work, travel and family.

Visit Scheduling

We offer early-morning and Saturday appointments at most branches. Self-ligating systems and Invisalign extend visit intervals to 10 weeks, useful for adults with demanding schedules.

Client-Facing Roles

Lingual or Invisalign typically the recommendation. Both are essentially invisible at conversational distance. Ceramic braces work for many less-image-sensitive professional roles.

Public Speakers and Performers

Plan around the first 4 weeks of any appliance (adaptation period). Lingual is often the choice for public figures who need full invisibility from the front. Singers may prefer ceramic or Invisalign.

Frequent Travellers

Invisalign is the most travel-friendly option, aligners are portable and visits can be condensed. Self-ligating systems with 10 week intervals also fit business travel well.

Parents Treating Alongside Their Kids

Many adult patients start treatment when their teen does. We coordinate appointments and offer family-treatment continuity, often the same orthodontist for parent and child.

Wedding or Event Timing

Plan backwards from the date. For mild cases, 9 months pre-event is enough for noticeable improvement. For complex cases, 24 months is realistic. We discuss timeline honestly.

Adult Orthodontics Pricing

Per-tier pricing for metal, ceramic, self-ligating, lingual and Invisalign options is published on our cost guide. Adult cases tend to be moderate to severe and fall into the mid-tier of each option. Pricing is itemised in your written quote after specialist consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for braces or Invisalign?

No. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adult orthodontics is a major part of our practice. We routinely treat patients in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s with predictable outcomes. Bone remodelling is slightly slower in adults, so treatment typically takes 6 months longer, but the final result is equally predictable.

What are my options as an adult?

All orthodontic options are available to adults: traditional metal braces, self-ligating metal, ceramic, self-ligating ceramic, lingual braces, Invisalign and non-Invisalign clear aligners. Most adults prioritise discreet options.

Will treatment take longer because I'm an adult?

Slightly. Adult bone remodelling is slower than in children and teens. Mild cases that take 12 months in teens may take 18 months in adults. Severe cases may take 36 months. Specialist orthodontists give honest timelines after CBCT and exam.

What is the most discreet option for adults?

Lingual braces (brackets behind the teeth, completely invisible from the front) and Invisalign (clear removable aligners) are the most discreet options. Lingual is fixed and the premium fixed-brace tier; Invisalign is removable and varies by tier. Ceramic braces are moderately discreet at lower cost.

How does adult orthodontics work with my professional life?

Most adult patients fit treatment around professional life with minimal impact. Invisalign is essentially invisible. Ceramic braces are unobtrusive in most professional settings. Self-ligating braces have fewer visit requirements (every 10 weeks). Patients in client-facing roles often choose lingual or Invisalign.

Will my gums recede with adult braces?

Gum recession in adults is more common than in teens, but it is largely caused by pre-existing gum issues and inadequate hygiene during treatment, not by braces themselves. We perform a periodontal assessment before starting treatment, treat any existing gum disease, and coach hygiene technique throughout.

Can I have orthodontics if I have crowns or veneers?

Often yes. Brackets bond reasonably well to porcelain (with surface preparation); aligners work without bonding to anything. Some configurations are more challenging than others, the specialist orthodontist evaluates at consultation and explains any case-specific considerations.

Can I have orthodontics if I have implants?

Yes, with planning. Implants do not move under orthodontic forces, this is actually useful, they can serve as anchorage. The teeth around them are moved while the implants stay fixed. Planning takes the implant position into account.

Can adults have orthodontic treatment with bone loss?

Often yes, but with caution. Mild to moderate bone loss does not preclude treatment but requires careful planning and may need periodontal treatment first. Severe bone loss may limit how much teeth can be moved.

Will I need extractions?

Sometimes. Severe crowding cases may require extractions to create space for alignment. Adults often have crowding that has worsened since adolescence, so extraction frequency is similar to or slightly higher than teen patients. Modern techniques (IPR, expansion) can sometimes avoid extractions.

How much does adult orthodontic treatment cost in Vietnam?

Pricing depends on appliance choice and case complexity. Per-tier pricing is published on our cost guide, with Invisalign-specific tiers on our Invisalign cost guide. Adults can typically expect mid-tier pricing as cases tend to be moderate to severe.

Will I need to wear retainers indefinitely?

Yes, especially as an adult. Adult teeth have a stronger tendency to drift after treatment than teen teeth. Lifelong nightly retainer wear is essential. Many adult patients also benefit from fixed retainers (a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth) for the most reliable retention.
